How should I be creative?
Is there a certain right way to be creative?
Do you have to use your hands, draw, paint or sew to be creative?
I think being creative is about thinking differently. Thinking outside the box, doing something you wouldn't normally do, creating something, inventing something or creating new connections and patterns.
Using the right half of the brain is something everyone can do. Just in different ways.
But how do you do it?
I have so often experienced that ‘lightning strikes’ with a new idea in the middle of my shower or on the way to the shops. But rarely when I'm sitting there and have to present a new crazy idea in front of business partners or other important people. It's as if creativity is like a little bird - sometimes it lands on your hand and sits there beeping with great ideas and new connections. You want to pin it down and make it stay. If you do, you can be sure it will fly away again.
So can't you count on your creativity?
The answer is yes.
You can learn some tools to keep it going. You can train your brain with exercises or practice, for example, writing down two ideas every day, whether they are groundbreakingly good or bad. Just to keep you going - that is, if you need to because of your work as a creative.
You can also practice telling yourself that it's okay! That it's not necessarily about creating beautiful things or reinventing the wheel every single time.
The magic will come again - when you least expect it.
I don't know if I'm right. At least that's what I tell myself on days that are less creative.
